  • 12 teaspoons black gel food coloring
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes with an electric mixer on medium speed.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then add the vanilla extract.
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of black gel food coloring and mix until evenly distributed. Add more in 1/4 teaspoon increments until desired shade is reached (about 1 1/2 teaspoons total).
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Fold in the chocolate chips with a rubber spatula until evenly distributed.
  8. Transfer the dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Using lightly greased or floured hands, shape the dough into a rough cat silhouette (rounded head, two pointed ears, wider body) about 1/2 inch thick.
  9. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until edges are set and lightly golden. Center may still look slightly soft.
  10. Let the cookie cake cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely (about 30 minutes).
  11. Once cooled, decorate with candy eyes, black licorice whiskers, or other desired decorations.

Notes

Use gel food coloring, not liquid, to avoid a sticky dough and chemical taste. For a cleaner cat shape, trim edges with a sharp knife while slightly warm. The cookie cake tastes even better the next day as flavors develop. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
