A lively and refreshing cold brew tonic enhanced with bright orange zest and warm, spicy homemade cardamom syrup. Perfect for summer, this drink balances bitter, sweet, and citrusy flavors in a crisp, cool beverage.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (240 ml) cold brew coffee (medium roast preferred)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) tonic water (high-quality like Schweppes or Fever-Tree)
  • 3 tablespoons homemade cardamom syrup (made from green cardamom pods, sugar, and water)
  • Zest of one medium orange
  • Ice cubes (large preferred)
  • Optional garnishes: thin orange slices, crushed cardamom pods

Instructions

  1. Make the Cardamom Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar, 1/2 cup (120 ml) water, and 10 crushed green cardamom pods. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes to infuse.
  2. Strain and Cool: Remove from heat, strain syrup through a fine mesh sieve into a heatproof container, discarding pods. Let cool completely before use. Store in fridge up to two weeks.
  3. Prepare Orange Zest: Using a microplane or fine zester, zest one medium orange carefully, avoiding white pith. Set aside.
  4. Assemble Drink: Fill a tall glass with large ice cubes. Pour 1 cup cold brew coffee over ice, then slowly add 1 cup tonic water to preserve fizz. Stir gently.
  5. Add Cardamom Syrup: Pour in 3 tablespoons cooled cardamom syrup. Stir gently again. Adjust sweetness if desired but avoid overpowering bitterness.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle a pinch of orange zest on top. Add thin orange slices or crushed cardamom pods for aroma and presentation.
