Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups (345g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk (or almond milk for dairy-free option)
  • ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 cups (360g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Red and blue gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat softened butter with granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Add egg and vanilla: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until combined.
  4. Combine wet and dry: Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in two parts, alternating with milk. Mix on low speed until just combined.
  5. Chill the dough: Divide dough into two discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  7. Roll and cut: Roll out one disc to ¼ inch thickness and cut shapes with cookie cutters. Place on baking sheets about 1 inch apart.
  8. Bake: Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges start to turn golden. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Prepare buttercream frosting: Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, then add heavy cream and vanilla extract. Beat until fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  10. Color the frosting: Divide frosting into three bowls; color one red, one blue, and leave one white.
  11. Decorate: Frost cooled cookies with red, white, and blue frosting. Let set for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Chill dough for at least 1 hour to prevent spreading. Use gel food coloring for vibrant frosting without thinning. Measure flour by spooning and leveling to avoid dry cookies. Bake one sheet at a time for even heat distribution. Dough can be made and chilled up to 2 days ahead or frozen for 3 months. Frost cookies after baking and cooling.
