These adorable handprint sugar cookies are shaped like little hands and decorated as turkeys. They’re quick, easy, and perfect for making memories with kids in the kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks, 226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups (312g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Royal icing or store-bought frosting, for decorating
  • Food coloring (red, orange, yellow, brown)
  • Sprinkles, candy eyes, mini candy-coated chocolates, for decorating

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl with a wooden spoon until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to the wet mixture in two batches, stirring just until no streaks of flour remain.
  4. Shape the dough into a flat disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to about ¼-inch thickness.
  7. Have your child press their hand firmly into the dough. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut around the handprint, about ½ inch outside the impression.
  8. Place the handprint cookies on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until edges are just barely golden.
  9. Let cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, decorate as turkeys: use colored frosting for feathers on the fingers, add candy eyes, a candy corn beak, and a red M&M wattle.

Notes

Chill the dough thoroughly for best results. Don’t overbake—pull cookies when edges are just golden. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend. For vegan, use vegan butter and a flax egg. Store undecorated cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Freeze unbaked cookies for up to 3 months.
