Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round wooden board or platter (at least 14 inches across)
  • 8–10 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, cut into thin slices
  • 6–8 ounces salami, thinly sliced
  • 4–6 ounces pepperoni slices
  • 1 cup black olives, drained
  • 8–10 round crackers
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Black food coloring or black olive paste (optional)
  • 1 large black olive (for spider body)
  • 8 small black olive slices (for spider legs)
  • 1 small dollop of cream cheese (for spider eyes)
  • 1/2 cup grapes, red or green (optional)
  • 1/4 cup almonds or pecans (optional)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs (optional)
  • Mini pretzel sticks (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the cream cheese spread: In a small bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, sour cream, garlic powder, and salt until smooth. If using black food coloring, add it drop by drop until you get the desired color. Spoon the mixture into a zip-top bag and snip off a tiny corner.
  2. Prepare the board: Place your board on a flat surface. Arrange the sliced cheddar in a ring around the outer edge of the board, leaving the center empty. Layer the slices slightly overlapping for a full look.
  3. Create the spider web base: Starting from the center of the board, pipe a thin line of cream cheese mixture out to the edge. Repeat this 6-8 times, like drawing spokes on a wheel, spacing them evenly.
  4. Build the web circles: Pipe concentric circles of cream cheese connecting the spokes. Start about 2 inches from the center, then add circles every 2 inches moving outward. You should end up with 3-4 circles total.
  5. Fill the sections: Arrange salami slices in the spaces between the web lines. Fold each slice in half or quarter for a ruffled look. Place pepperoni slices in other sections. Add black olives here and there. Tuck crackers between the meat sections. Fill any gaps with grapes or nuts.
  6. Make the spider: Take the large black olive and cut it in half lengthwise. Place one half in the center of the web for the spider body. Cut the other half into 8 thin strips for legs. Arrange 4 legs on each side of the body, curving them slightly. Add two tiny dots of cream cheese on the body for eyes.
  7. Final touches: Step back and look at your board. Fill any empty spots with extra crackers or nuts. Add rosemary sprigs around the edges for a creepy garden feel. Wipe any smudges off the board edge with a paper towel.

Notes

Room temperature cream cheese is essential for smooth piping. Cut the bag tip small (1/8-inch opening) for better control. Work from center outward when piping the web. Don’t overload the board; leave some space between items. Prep all ingredients before starting assembly. For make-ahead, assemble without the cream cheese web and add it just before serving.
