Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 500g total), peeled and diced into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 1 large yellow onion (about 200g), diced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz / 411g) fire-roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz / 227g) tomato sauce
  • 2 cups (480ml) low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425g) dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425g) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons (16g) chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon (8g) ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon (3g) smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon (0.5g) ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon (2g) dried oregano (Mexican or Mediterranean)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil
  • Optional toppings: sour cream or Greek yogurt, shredded cheddar cheese, sliced avocado, fresh cilantro, lime wedges, sliced jalapeños

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients first: dice the onion, mince the garlic, peel and cube the sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch pieces. Drain and rinse both cans of beans. Open the cans of tomatoes and tomato sauce. Measure out your spices into a small bowl.
  2. Heat the oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until translucent and starting to brown at the edges.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground turkey to the pot. Break it up with your spoon and cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink. Let any excess liquid cook off.
  5. Sprinkle in all the spices (chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cinnamon, oregano, salt, and pepper). Stir and cook for 1 minute to toast the spices.
  6. Add the diced sweet potatoes to the pot. Stir to coat them in the spice mixture and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Pour in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and chicken broth. Stir everything together, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  8. Bring the chili to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
  9. Add the drained and rinsed beans to the pot. Stir gently and simmer uncovered for another 10 minutes to thicken slightly.
  10. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt, cumin, or a dash of hot sauce if desired.
  11. Let the chili rest for 5 minutes off the heat before serving. Serve hot with your favorite toppings.

Notes

For best flavor, make the chili a day ahead and reheat. The chili can be frozen for up to 3 months. If the chili tastes flat at the end, add more salt or a squeeze of lime juice. To thicken, simmer uncovered longer or mash some beans/sweet potatoes against the pot.
