easy 3-ingredient berry compote - featured image

A quick and simple homemade berry compote made with just berries, sugar, and lemon juice. Perfect as a sweet topping for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (300g) mixed berries (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Measure your ingredients: 2 cups (300g) mixed berries, 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar, and 1 tablespoon (15ml) fresh lemon juice.
  2. Combine berries and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir gently to coat the berries evenly and cook until juices release, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, until the sauce thickens slightly but berries retain some shape.
  4. Stir in 1 tablespoon (15ml) fresh lemon juice during the last 2 minutes of cooking to brighten the flavors.
  5. Check consistency and simmer longer if a thicker compote is desired, adding a splash of water if too thick.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Simmer berries gently to keep some texture and avoid mushiness. Frozen berries can be used without thawing. Adjust sugar to taste. Lemon juice is essential for brightness. Can be stored in the fridge up to 5 days or frozen up to 3 months.
