A quick and easy homemade deep dish pizza with a crispy cast iron skillet crust, loaded with Italian sausage, bacon, pepperoni, and a blend of cheeses for a hearty meat lovers delight.

  • 2 ½ cups (320g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ cup (120ml) pizza sauce
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup (50g) shredded provolone cheese
  • ½ cup (75g) cooked Italian sausage, crumbled
  • ½ cup (75g) cooked bacon, chopped
  • ½ cup (50g) sliced pepperoni
  • Optional: ¼ cup (30g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning
  • Red pepper flakes, to taste

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir or knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Cover dough with plastic wrap or a damp towel and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1 ½ hours until doubled in size.
  4. Cook and crumble Italian sausage and bacon. Slice pepperoni and shred cheeses while dough rises.
  5. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C) and place cast iron skillet inside to heat for 10 minutes.
  6. Punch down dough and carefully press into hot skillet, pushing dough up the sides to form a ½ inch thick deep dish crust.
  7. Spread pizza sauce evenly over dough. Layer mozzarella and provolone cheeses, then add sausage, bacon, and pepperoni. Sprinkle Parmesan and oregano on top.
  8. Bake in oven for 18-22 minutes until crust is golden and cheese is bubbly. Watch closely after 15 minutes to avoid burning.
  9. Let pizza cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Preheat the cast iron skillet before adding dough to achieve a crispy crust. Let the dough rise fully for a tender base. Avoid overloading sauce to prevent soggy crust. Pre-cook meats to avoid greasy toppings. Let pizza rest after baking for easier slicing.
