A quick and easy recipe for crispy shrimp wontons made in the air fryer, served with a vibrant sweet and spicy dipping sauce. Perfect as a snack or appetizer with less oil and mess than traditional frying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 pound medium shrimp, peeled, deveined, and finely chopped
  • About 30 wonton wrappers (square preferred)
  • 2 stalks green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooking spray or oil for air fryer basket (avocado oil spray recommended)
  • For the Sweet and Spicy Sauce:
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the finely chopped shrimp, green onions, minced garlic, grated ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until evenly distributed (about 5 minutes).
  2. Lay out wonton wrappers on a clean surface. Keep wrappers covered with a damp towel to prevent drying. Have beaten egg ready for sealing.
  3. Place about 1 teaspoon of shrimp mixture in the center of each wrapper. Brush edges lightly with beaten egg, fold diagonally to form a triangle, and press edges firmly to seal, ensuring no air pockets.
  4. Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes.
  5. Lightly spray air fryer basket with oil. Arrange wontons in a single layer with space between them. Cook in batches if needed.
  6. Air fry wontons for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. Watch closely near the end to prevent burning.
  7. While wontons cook, whisk together honey, sriracha, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and garlic powder in a small bowl. Adjust heat as desired.
  8. Remove wontons from air fryer and serve hot with the sweet and spicy sauce on the side.

Notes

Keep wonton wrappers covered with a damp towel to prevent drying. Use egg wash to seal tightly for a golden edge and crisp texture. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even crisping. Flip wontons halfway through cooking. For gluten-free, use gluten-free wonton wrappers or rice paper sheets. Baking alternative: bake at 400°F for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway.
