These homemade apple dumplings with cinnamon sauce are absurdly simple—wrapped apples baked until soft and sticky in a sweet, buttery cinnamon sauce—but taste like you spent hours in the kitchen. Perfect for a weeknight dessert or a holiday table, they’re a crowd-pleaser that converts even self-proclaimed apple haters.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Wash and dry the apples. Remove the core from each apple using a paring knife or apple corer, working from the top down without cutting through the bottom. Peel if desired.
  3. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons granulated sugar and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Stir until evenly mixed.
  4. Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate into 8 triangles. Place one apple half (or whole small apple) on the wide end of each triangle. Sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon of the cinnamon-sugar mixture into the apple cavity. Wrap the dough around the apple, stretching gently to cover as much as possible, and pinch the seams to seal.
  5. Arrange the wrapped apples seam-side down in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Melt 1/4 cup unsalted butter. Brush the tops of each dumpling generously with the melted butter.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the buttered tops.
  8. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar, 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg. Whisk until well mixed. Add 1 cup water and 2 tablespoons unsalted butter. Continue whisking as the mixture comes to a gentle boil. Let boil for 1-2 minutes until the sugar is dissolved and the sauce has thickened slightly. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  9. Slowly pour the warm cinnamon sauce over and around the dumplings in the baking dish.
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Halfway through baking, spoon some of the sauce from the bottom over the tops of the dumplings.
  11. Let the dumplings rest in the dish for 5-10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with a generous spoonful of the cinnamon sauce.

Notes

For best results, baste the dumplings halfway through baking with the sauce from the bottom of the dish. Let them rest for 5-10 minutes after baking to allow the sauce to thicken. The dumplings are even better the next day as the sauce soaks into the dough and apples.
