These bakery-style cookies feature a perfect balance of crispy edges and a chewy center, enhanced by the rich, nutty flavor of brown butter. Easy to make with simple pantry ingredients, they are a crowd-pleasing treat perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, browned
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (220g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 ¼ cups (280g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups (270g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter: Place 1 cup unsalted butter in a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Stir frequently until melted, foamy, and turning golden with brown specks. When it smells nutty and is a deep amber color, remove from heat and transfer to a heatproof bowl. Let cool for 10 minutes.
  2. Mix sugars and eggs: In a large bowl, combine granulated sugar and brown sugar. Pour in cooled brown butter, add eggs and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and creamy.
  3. Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Combine wet and dry: Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, stirring until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Fold in chocolate chips evenly throughout the dough.
  6. Optional: Chill dough for 30 minutes to 1 hour to control spreading and enhance flavor.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  8. Scoop dough balls about 2 tablespoons each, spaced 2 inches apart on baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden and centers look slightly underbaked.
  10. Cool cookies on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Watch the butter carefully when browning to avoid burning. Chill dough to control spreading and enhance flavor. Pull cookies out when edges are set but centers are still soft for the perfect chewy texture. Store baked cookies in an airtight container with a slice of bread to keep them chewy longer.
